Midwest Solar Services is looking for a Solar Technician to join our team. We are a growing company focused on repair and maintenance of solar systems. Midwest Solar Services provides employees with training on all aspects of solar array maintenance and repairs. Previous solar experience is preferred, but not required, as we recognize skills gained through other trades are relevant to what we do. All individuals hired for this role will receive comprehensive on the job training pertaining to all aspects of PV fundamentals, testing, diagnostics, installation, maintenance, and repair of all types of solar systems up to and including utility scale systems.
Technician Responsibilities:
- Inspecting, analyzing, and troubleshooting systems and equipment.
- Reading repair manuals and liaising with other professionals.
- Running tests and interpreting results to make effective recommendations.
- Writing up reports, safety regulations, and preventative maintenance plans.
- Sourcing replacement parts.
- Negotiating with suppliers and clients.
- Repairing or replacing faulty equipment.
Requirements:
- High school diploma.
- Ability to commute to our headquarters in Dubuque, IA
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to be insured as a driver of our fleet vehicles.
- Ability to pass drug test and criminal background check
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work on roofs and climb ladders.
- Willing and able to work outside in both summer and winter.
- Ability to travel. Overnights are rare and most work is within 100 miles of Dubuque, IA.
- Ability to adhere with strict electrical and construction safety protocols.
- Comfortable with computers, smartphones, and related applications.
- Ability to use electronic scheduling and record keeping software.
- Ability to explain problems simply and clearly.
- Ability to understand verbal and written instructions.
- Process and detail orientated.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
General Skills & Experience:
Due to the specific skill set required, extensive on the job training will be provided. Successful candidates will have a technical aptitude and be willing and able to learn at a fast pace.
- Familiarization with power tools such as drills, impact drivers, Sawzall, etc.
- Experience in equipment troubleshooting / electrical troubleshooting.
- Ability to understand electrical drawings.
- Knowledge of AC and/or DC electrical systems.
- Knowledge of electrical principles, means, and methods.
- Understanding of troubleshooting methods for electrical circuits.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn NEC code requirements.
- Knowledge of solar componentry including inverters, modules, combiner boxes, communications, etc.
- Familiarity with specialized tools such as volt meters, amp clamps, mega ohmmeters, RJ45 crimpers, torque wrenches/screw drivers and ability to learn how to use other advanced diagnostic tools such as oscilloscope, dataloggers and IR cameras.
- Ability to learn solar system data analysis.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn IT/Network setup, switch, router, IP configuration, cell modem, VPN access.
- Proficient with PV troubleshooting methods and theory.
Bonus Credentials:

- NABCEP Credential or Associate
- Licensed Electrician
